Resident Conductor - Gavin Lindsay

Gavin Lindsay started playing a brass instrument at the age of twelve in Lancashire where he grew up and his first band was the Tyldesley Prize Band under conductor Brian Peacock. This was followed by a spell with Wigan Band under Teddy Gray.

In 1974, Gavin joined the band of The Royal Highland Fusiliers and became the band’s principal cornet shortly thereafter. On leaving the Army, he took up a teaching post on the Island of Islay where he lived for a period of six years and it was in 1985 that he started playing with the CWS (Glasgow) Band on repiano cornet. He soon became the band’s soprano cornet player and during his time in that position the band enjoyed a number of major successes including two National Championship wins in 1990 and 1996, seven Scottish Championship wins as well as being runner-up at the European Championships on two occasions. The highlights of his playing career with the band include the band’s tour of Australia and New Zealand in 1993 and guest appearances with various bands such as Fodens, Sun Life and Wingates. Since leaving CWS (Glasgow) band, he has variously conducted a number of bands including Whitburn, CWS (Glasgow), Brighouse & Rastrick, Kingdom Brass and Dalewool Band in Auckland, New Zealand where he spent a short period of time before returning to the United Kingdom.
