Co-operative Funeralcare Concert Raises Money For Charity

On Saturday, 19th March, 2011 The Co-operative Funeralcare Band gave a concert at Peebles Old Parish Church in aid of the “Mary’s Meals” charity. The concert was organised by the Rotary Club of Peebles and at the start of the evening’s proceedings, Mr. David Spencer of the Rotary Club gave an outline of the charity’s work.

In a wide and varied programme the band, conducted by Colin McKenzie, entertained a sizeable audience to a fine evening of music which included solos from principal cornet player, Jim Hayes, who played Alan Morrison’s arrangement of “Cry Me a River”, and principal trombonist, Paul Kiernan who gave a fine performance of Errol Garner’s “Misty”.

Among the band items played were arrangements of Bach’s “Toccata in D Minor” and Richard Strauss’ “Fest Musik der Stadt Wien” both of which found favour in the eyes of an enthusiastic audience.

At the conclusion of the evening, Mr. Spencer gave a vote of thanks and as a result of concert ticket sales and donations just over £1000 was raised for the charity which is an international movement to set up school feeding projects in communities where poverty and hunger prevent children from receiving an education.
