On Saturday, 26th March, 2011 The Co-operative Funeralcare Band gave a concert in the church of St. Leonard’s–In–The–Fields in Perth in aid of the Swaziland Children’s Food Aid Programme”. The concert was organised by the Perth Kinnoul Rotary Club.
In a wide and varied programme which was conducted and compered by composer Paul Lovatt-Cooper, the band treated a large audience to a fine evening of music which included a performance of four of the conductor’s own works. Among these were the cornet solo “Emerald Skies” played by the band’s principal cornet Jim Hayes and a new work entitled “Island Whirl” which is based on the old Scottish folk song “An Eriskay Love Lilt”.
The performance of this latter work was a world premiere and it was fitting that the person for whom the work was written was in the audience. That person was none other than Mr. Ian Milligan who is the conductor of Callander Brass and the work had been commissioned by his wife, Margaret, as a 70th birthday present. At the conclusion of the performance, Ian was called forward and was presented with a framed presentation page of the score duly signed by the composer.
Among other items played by the band were Peter Graham’s “Alloway Tales”, Erik Satie’s “Gymnopedie No.1” and the ever popular Goff Richards number “A Disney Fantasy” all of which were enthusiastically received by the audience.
At the conclusion of the evening, a vote of thanks was given by the Rotary Club president, Colin Moreland, for a very successful and enjoyable evening which raised over £2000 for the Food Aid Programme.
