The Co-operative Funeralcare Band after picking up silverware as the newly crowned Scottish Regional Champions 2012 are now going for gold after being selected as one of the five bands to start the ‘Brass The Baton’ Olympic relay.

Terry Luddington BFBB National Liaison Officer commented “We are asking bands to come up with creative ideas to help maximise participation in the relay and the Co-operative Funeralcare Band have submitted a great proposal to take part in ‘Brass The Baton’, I am delighted to confirm their application has been accepted”.

The Co-operative Funeralcare Band will collect one of the five coloured conductor’s batons, at the European Championships in Rotterdam and start the Black Baton relay by bringing it back to the UK, and showcasing the newly commissioned piece ‘Going the Distance’ by Paul Lowatt-Copper at The Great Northern Spring Brass Festival, Bridgewater Hall, Manchester. The concert featuring euphonium virtuoso David Childs will be jointly conducted by Dr Nicholas Childs and Paul Lovatt-Copper.

Chairman Paul Kiernan commented “The Olympics will leave a lasting legacy and it’s important that music is part of that. We have English, Northern Irish and of course Scots in the band and we will be conducted by the very proud Welshman Dr Nicholas Childs so it will give ‘Brass The Baton’ a truly united welcome from all four corners of Great Britain.”

Band Manager Martin Stack commented “To have the opportunity to join the many bands taking part in this exciting project would have been great but to be asked to help start the relay from Rotterdam is a great honour for the band and our sponsors”.
