The Co-operative Funeralcare Bands Fine Performance At Land O Burns Contest

On Saturday, 29th August, 2009, The Co-operative Funeralcare Band took part in the annual Land O’ Burns brass band contest in the Walker Halls in Troon, Ayrshire. The contest is organised by the Dalmellington Band and was the fifteenth in a series of what has become an event which appeals to both players and audiences alike and which has expanded and progressed with the passage of time.

Competing against thirteen other bands from all of the four sections, the Co-operative Funeralcare Band gave a very fine performance in delivering its own choice programme under the baton of musical director, Michael Fowles. Among the items performed were Paul Lovatt-Cooper’s “Enter The Galaxies”, the trombone solo “Bolivar” played by Paul Kiernan, the Gilbert Vinter test piece “Salute To Youth”, the beautiful quintette “ Eyes Of A Child” by M. Jalkeus and “The Downfall Of Lucifer” by Derek Bourgeois all of which were played with great style and polish.

At the end of the day however, the band, having gained 193 points, had to be content with second place overall and lost out narrowly to old rivals, the Whitburn Band who were awarded 194 points by adjudicator David Horsfield.

In gaining second place, the band won the James Bryce Memorial Trophy and a cheque for £1000 while two of the band’s players won individual awards. Caroline Farren, the band’s flugel horn player won The Dalmellington Junior Band Trophy while principal trombonist, Paul Kiernan won the best trombone award. The awards were presented by Provost Winifred Sloan of South Ayrshire Council.
